Organizing Bathrooms and Linen Closets PDF Print E-mail

linen_closetIf your linen closet has turned into a mound of mismatched washcloths, towels, sheets, pillowcases, and a catchall for anything related to your bathroom, it’s time to tackle this project. Read on for tips on how to best organize your linen closet and bathroom.

  • Medicines - I find using small storage containers for medicines to be an easy solution. Sorted by use (cold medicines, pain relievers, band-aids, prescriptions) in labeled containers makes items easier to find as well as ensuring that you know when something is almost out so you can replace it. Remember to go through all medications quarterly as well and check for expiration dates. When you need to dispose of any medications, a good resource for safe disposal is your local pharmacist or Operation Medicine Cabinet.

  • Towels and sheets - Keep your towels and sheets folded in a consistent manner. I keep my towels on one shelf and sheets on another. If you are limited with space, consider storing sheets in the bedroom closet of the room they are used. As for towels, use the bathroom cupboard if needed.

  • Toiletries - Everyday items are better stored in your bathroom cupboard or medicine cabinet and seasonal items are better stored in your linen closet. Store your back-up toiletries on three-tiered expanding racks that are typically used in the kitchen for spices or a labeled basket or container. It will make them easier to find, and once you use the back-up you can add it to your grocery list for replacing. This system is also good for items such as insect repellants, sunscreen, toothpaste, etc

  •  Make-up - Instead of having a large cosmetic bag that accumulates a number of items, consider using small, stackable, labeled boxes (eye make-up in one, lipstick in another, etc.). For items used on a daily basis, another solution is to place these in a small decorative dish and leave out on your counter/vanity. According to Real Simple, "many products have a period after opening label, a number followed by the letter M." To remember expirations of these products, place a small, round sticker on the bottom with the date you opened the item and follow the product guidelines.

  • basket_of_tpToilet Paper and Tissues - It can be incredibly frustrating to not have toilet paper or a tissue when you need it! Keeping a nice basket right by your toilet filled with spare rolls of toilet paper will not only prevent your from running out, but serve as a reminder when you are running low to restock. Keep a spare box of tissues in your bathroom cupboard as well and replace when used.

  • Hair products - If you are space deprived in your bathroom for your blow dryer, hair straightener, curling iron, hairspray, brushes, etc., consider storing them in a covered basket on your countertop or floor, under your sink or in a bag that you can hang from a door knob.

This project doesn’t need to take a long time – you can complete it in an afternoon! Implement these tips to find what you need right away and discover space you didn’t even know you had.
