How to De-Clutter for Charity PDF Print E-mail
groceriesDonate food – Food banks see the highest demand in the winter months, especially around the holidays. Take this opportunity to clean out your pantry. If you have non-perishable foods that are not damaged or expired, consider donating them to your local shelter or food bank.

Donate coats and jackets – A warm coat is something most of us take for granted, but there are many who desperately need one. If your family has coats or jackets that they no longer wear or have outgrown, consider donating them to One Warm Coat. This organization helps to get coats to those who need them throughout the United States and Canada. Visit their website for additional details.

Donate clothing– Don't stop with your coat closet. Sort through your clothing, as well, and see if you have more that you can donate. Most charities accept clothing and shoes. There are some specialized charities such as Dress for Success that accept career wear for low-income people who are interviewing for a job.

toys_for_totsDonate toys – One of the charities that many people are familiar with is Toys for Tots. They require that their donations be new, unwrapped toys. Whether your child has received duplicate toys without gift receipts or they just have a toy that they aren't interested in, now is a great time to donate them. For your gently used toys and books, check with places like the Salvation Army. Get your children involved in this process. Not only will they feel good about helping others, but you are teaching them valuable organizing skills at the same time.

Take time before the end of the year to look through your home for things you don't need that could be put to use by others. You'll help to de-clutter your home, and more importantly, you will brighten someone else’s holiday season.
