Clutter-Free Gift Giving PDF Print E-mail
gift_basketConsumables – This is one of my favorites. Give something that your recipient can enjoy and use up. Fancy chocolates, wine, hot chocolate, coffee, baking mixes, grill marinades, fire starters, lotions, soaps, and candles are all thoughtful gifts that will likely get used up rather take up space. My mom has given our family fancy fire starters for our fire place that turn the flames different colors. We love sitting around the fire as a family and the kids have a lot of fun watching them.

Events – Consider what your recipient enjoys doing. Whether it's movie tickets for a teenager, a spa package, a pair of tickets to a Lions Pistons game for a sports fan, an upcoming show for a theater lover, or a series of cooking classes or dance classes, thoughtful experiences are things your recipient will love.

gift_cardGift Cards – Though sometimes criticized as impersonal, gift cards can be a great gift. If you know someone who enjoys a particular hobby (e.g. scrapbooking, knitting, drawing, homebrewing, etc.), a gift card to a specialty store is a very personal gift. Often times it can be used toward classes as well as products. Another great use of gift cards is to coordinate with others for a recipient who is trying to save up for a larger item. You can each give gift cards toward the purchase. Lastly, most people love to go out for dinner using a gift card. Between soccer, baseball, swimming, scouting, etc., my husband and I don’t get out for date nights as often as we might like. We love to receive "a night out".

Charitable Donations – I think we all know someone who seems to have everything. Rather than wasting money on token items that might never be used, consider donating to their favorite charity in their name. Almost every charity will gladly provide you a card to give to your recipient explaining your gift.

As you shop for gifts this season, consider choosing personal gifts from these unique clutter-free gift ideas.
